Hemp flour has an earthy, nutty flavour and a slightly grainy texture.

Hemp flour is a gluten-free flour. It is dense and produces a granular texture when used for cooking and baking, much like corn flour. It is ideal for baking and thickening sauces. High in fibre, fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, hemp flour adds a creative, nutritional twist to home-made bread, muffins, cookies and crepes.

Due to the high chlorophyll content, the flour will vary from a light to dark green colour.

Hemp flour is also a great source of dietary fibre. Dietary fibre is essential because it ensures that the digestive system is functioning as well as it can be. It can also help to make people feel full for longer than they otherwise would, something that could potentially help with weight loss.

Health Benefits of Hemp Flour

Hemp Flour is a great source of protein. Hemp Seed Flour is approximately 35% protein.

Hemp Flour is packed full of essential amino acids and fatty acids. The amino acids that are present include quite a few that our bodies cannot produce on their own. The only way for us to benefit from those amino acids is by consuming them.

Hemp flour is different because it does not need to be heavily processed while it is being made. This means that it retains vitamins and minerals because the nutritious benefits are not lost during the processing phase. It contains magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, iron, zinc, thiamine and a number of other useful vitamins and minerals.

How Much Hemp Flour to Use?

As a general rule, you would replace 10% of your normal bake flour with Hemp Flour. As Hemp Flour does not contain gluten, it will not rise and is very hearty and therefore is not a flour that can be used in bread on its own, you would need to mix it with other flours, unless you are making a flat bread or a cracker. You can use us in a 3:1 ratio to produce a hearty, heavy loaf all the way to a 7:1 ratio which produces basically a loaf of bread with hemp flecks in it.
